HISTORY OF THE CLUB

Reedyford Dog Training Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2008 having been formed in 1958.  In 1965 the club amalgamated with Burnley Alsatian Club which itself was formed in 1960.  The club then became Reedyford Dog Training and German Shepherd Dog Club.

Originally the grounds behind Nelson and Colne College were used for our training site.  In 1991 the club moved to Ball Grove Park and in 1998 to its present headquarters at Marsden Community Centre.

The first show was put on in 1967 for both breed and obedience.  These shows continued until the German Shepherd breed side was fazed out due to lack of support.  The obedience side continues to this day. Over the years  -

  •   Eight members have qualified to work their dogs in Champion Obedience Shows
  •   Four members dogs have qualified to work at Crufts
  •   Two members dogs have represented the North of England at Crufts

At present six dogs belonging to members are working in Competition Obedience.

The main aim of the club is to promote responsible dog ownership.

We at Reedyford Dog Training Club are the only dog training club in the area that is affiliated to the Kennel Club. This means that, not only are we eligible to run the Kennel Club Good Citizen Award Scheme but also, under licence to the Kennel Club, are allowed to put on Obedience Competition Shows.  We put on two of these shows per year (Spring and Autumn) attracting between 600 and 700 competitors from all over the country. It is these shows that allow us to keep our training fees to a minimum.  This, and the fact that all our trainers give their time free.

All dog training clubs are not the same.  We pride ourselves on having experienced trainers and a high professional standard.  We have an enrolment evening when after a very brief introductory talk you are welcome to speak on a one to one basis with any of the trainers if you feel you have any questions to ask.

If you cannot attend the enrolment evening, do not worry.  We, at Reedyford encourage with obligation, anyone at any time during a course to come along, preferably without your dog and watch a class in progress.  You can then see for yourself our training methods which are kind and relaxed with no harsh handling.

  •  All breeds are welcome
  •  Full insurance for your peace of mind
  •  Qualified Judge to asses the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme on test night
